Darryl Kaplan
Darryl is the Portfolio Manager of the Global Equities Opportunity Fund. In this role Darryl is responsible for asset allocation and selection of international listed equities.
Darryl graduated with an LLB from the University of Cape Town in 1988 (Magna Cum Laude). Darryl also holds a Bachelor of Business Science from the University of Cape Town.
On moving to Australia, Darryl commenced employment in the commercial property department of Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Sydney in 1989, during which time he re-qualified in New South Wales.
Darryl left Mallesons in 1991 to return to South Africa, where he entered the merchant banking/corporate finance industry via Davis Borkum Hare, one of the largest and most highly respected Johannesburg Stock Exchange broking firms. Davis Borkum Hare was acquired by Smith New Court PLC which was in turn acquired by Merrill Lynch International.
After successfully completing an international capital raising for a client, The Bidvest Group Limited, Darryl was approached by the client to take up the role of manager of corporate finance. Darryl held that position from 1996 to 1999 during which time Bidvest’s market capitalisation increased from approximately 3 billion Rands to approximately 13 billion Rands, a large part of which came from value accretive acquisitions.
Darryl returned permanently to Australia in 1999 and following 2 in-house legal positions in the software industry until 2003 became self-employed, managing his own and his family’s affairs in global listed and unlisted equity interests and other assets utilizing the experience and disciplines gained in his professional employment to seek value accretive investments.
